Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you're cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It's not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks ? it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it's gone, you lose. But don't worry! If you don't make it on the first try, it's very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it's a cute game. I've seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise ? a few minutes of pure time wasting!

Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive

9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.

HTC Aria Update Flips Android 2.2 Froyo

Can you feel the love, AT&T subscribers? You should, because HTC just kicked out an update that upgrades the Aria to Android 2.2, otherwise known as Froyo. This marks the first time AT&T has updated Android software on more than one device in a month, and who knows, maybe it's a trend that will continue now that Apple's once monogamous relationship with Apple's iPhone 4 is suddenly polygamous.

Updating the Aria smartphone to Android 2.2 requires a "Hard Reset and anything that is NOT part of the Operating System (applications downloaded from Android Market, SMS/MMS, email, etc.) will be permanently deleted," HTC warns. So in other words, be sure to backup your data before flipping the switch to Froyo.

The Froyo update introduces several new features, including:
  • App Sharing -- allows you to share an application via Bluetooth, Friend Stream, email, etc.
  • Google Search Latitude -- see your friends' locations and share yours with them.
  • Navigation -- Google's GPS app.
  • Places -- search and find restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, etc.
  • Videos -- links directly to videos that have been taken with the camcorder
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot and USB Tethering -- use the Aria as a mobile hotspot for up to 8 devices or connect a PC using the Aria's data connection. Requires a separate data plan.
You can download the update here.

WaterField iPhone Smart Case Review

WaterField is a company that makes bags, sleeves and cases that protect expensive tech toys. I own two of their iPhone/iPod Travel Cases and still use the large-sized one (I outgrew the other one). This bag still looks almost brand new after two years of constant daily stuffing and re-stuffing. That?s amazing. So when WaterField sent me an iPhone Smart Case to review, I was interested.

Being a total klutz, I have dropped my iPhone several times, so I ALWAYS have it in a case of some kind. The iPhone Smart Case completely covers the iPhone, front and back, so you cannot use the phone unless you remove it first. That was a problem. There was no way I was going to insert and remove an unprotected iPhone from the Smart Case just to make a call, check email or whatever. I need to be able to use my iPhone while it is still in a semi-permanent case. This was nonnegotiable.

Well, I guess WaterField calls this a Smart Case for a reason. It?s really more like an outer jacket, than an inclusive case, meaning I can keep the case I already have and still have room to slip it into the Smart Case. So while I can ? and do ?drop my iPhone while in its shell case, when it has the added protection of the Smart Case, I can actually toss it across a room if I feel like it. Really.

The Smart Case comes fully padded with semi-rigid walls. In other words, it holds its shape. It?s interior is lined with ultrasuade liner to prevent scratching (yes, the iPhone?s tough glass front will scratch if you?re careless). Both the iPhone 3G/3GS and iPhone 4 fit perfectly inside their specific case. Obviously, with the shell case on, it becomes a tighter fit. There are six panel colors to choose from and all come with weathered leather trim giving the Smart Case a classic, well-travelled look.

A stretchy pocket on the outside can hold ear buds, cards, money, whatever.

I?m using the Slip model, which is self explanatory. It?s a basic version covering all sides except the top. Other versions include the Flap, which comes with a strap that wraps around a shoulder of a back pack or the Clip which clips to your belt. The style matches perfectly with other WaterField bags and pouches. The quality of workmanship ? like their other products ? is very good.

The WaterField Smart Case is made for one purpose, but the way it?s designed allows for more flexibility than a normal iPhone case. If you are coordinated and just have to use your iPhone in all its naked glory, the Smart Case is all you need. But if you are butterfingered like me, the Smart Case becomes more like added insurance than a stand alone case.

NVIDIA Announces CUDA Toolkit v4.0

New CUDA 4.0 Release Makes Parallel Programming Easier

Unified Virtual Addressing, GPU-to-GPU Communication and Enhanced C++ Template Libraries Enable More Developers to Take Advantage of GPU Computing

SANTA CLARA, Calif -- Feb. 28, 2011 --NVIDIA today announced the latest version of the NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit for developing parallel applications using NVIDIA GPUs.

The NVIDIA CUDA 4.0 Toolkit was designed to make parallel programming easier, and enable more developers to port their applications to GPUs. This has resulted in three main features:

  • NVIDIA GPUDirect 2.0 Technology ? Offers support for peer-to-peer communication among GPUs within a single server or workstation. This enables easier and faster multi-GPU programming and application performance.

  • Unified Virtual Addressing (UVA) ? Provides a single merged-memory address space for the main system memory and the GPU memories, enabling quicker and easier parallel programming.

  • Thrust C++ Template Performance Primitives Libraries ? Provides a collection of powerful open source C++ parallel algorithms and data structures that ease programming for C++ developers. With Thrust, routines such as parallel sorting are 5X to 100X faster than with Standard Template Library (STL) and Threading Building Blocks (TBB).

?Unified virtual addressing and faster GPU-to-GPU communication makes it easier for developers to take advantage of the parallel computing capability of GPUs,? said John Stone, senior research programmer, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

?Having access to GPU computing through the standard template interface greatly increases productivity for a wide range of tasks, from simple cashflow generation to complex computations with Libor market models, variable annuities or CVA adjustments,? said Peter Decrem, director of Rates Products at Quantifi. ?The Thrust C++ library has lowered the barrier of entry significantly by taking care of low-level functionality like memory access and allocation, allowing the financial engineer to focus on algorithm development in a GPU-enhanced environment.?

The CUDA 4.0 architecture release includes a number of other key features and capabilities, including:

  • MPI Integration with CUDA Applications ? Modified MPI implementations like OpenMPI automatically move data from and to the GPU memory over Infiniband when an application does an MPI send or receive call.

  • Multi-thread Sharing of GPUs ? Multiple CPU host threads can share contexts on a single GPU, making it easier to share a single GPU by multi-threaded applications.

  • Multi-GPU Sharing by Single CPU Thread ? A single CPU host thread can access all GPUs in a system. Developers can easily coordinate work across multiple GPUs for tasks such as ?halo? exchange in applications.

  • New NPP Image and Computer Vision Library ? A rich set of image transformation operations that enable rapid development of imaging and computer vision applications.

  • New and Improved Capabilities

    • Auto performance analysis in the Visual Profiler

    • New features in cuda-gdb and added support for MacOS

    • Added support for C++ features like new/delete and virtual functions

    • New GPU binary disassembler

A release candidate of CUDA Toolkit 4.0 will be available free of charge beginning March 4, 2011, by enrolling in the CUDA Registered Developer Program at www.nvidia.com/paralleldeveloper. The CUDA Registered Developer Program provides a wealth of tools, resources, and information for parallel application developers to maximize the potential of CUDA.

For more information on the features and capabilities of the CUDA Toolkit and on GPGPU applications, please visit: www.nvidia.com/cuda.

Switched On: Back from the Mac

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
Last week's Switched On discussed Nokia's quest to help Microsoft create a third mobile ecosystem alongside those of Apple and Google. That word ? ecosystem ? has clearly passed into the pantheon of buzzwords, leveraging many synergies from purpose-built paradigms. And yet, building and maintaining ecosystems is something few companies really understand. True technology ecosystems are more than just successful platforms or throwing many products together simply because they are owned by the same company. They are characterized by strategically implemented nurturing.

One concept that Apple seems to have adapted from natural ecosystems is the concept of the water cycle you probably learned about in grade school. Apple turns up the heat on the life-sustaining water of innovation that passes between the well-grounded Mac market and the soaring growth of the iOS market. Apple alluded to this cycle in its Back to the Mac event. After inheriting many technologies from Mac OS X, iOS began offering Mac OS X launch screens, full-screen apps, app resuming, and document autosaving. This week's announcements, though, show that the cycle may soon be heading again in the other direction as Apple showed off two Mac technologies that may well wind up strengthening the iOS ecosystem.

The first of these is Thunderbolt, Apple's term for Light Peak: an even faster bus than the one Sandra Bullock drove in Speed. Apple is no stranger to interconnect innovation, having developed the core technology behind IEEE 1394, aka FireWire.

Now, Apple is positioned to once again differentiate based on the speed of syncing media.

FireWire was the original way iPods connected to Macs, and it provided much faster music transfer than what was available from most competitors using first-generation USB. Now with iPads and iPhones available with more than six times as many gigabytes as that first iPod, Apple is positioned to once again differentiate based on the speed of syncing media. And this time, Intel -- which once championed USB -- will be the Keanu Reeves that moves the bus forward.

Thunderbolt would also do more much more than speed data transfers. It would provide a standardized port for video-out, which would be a boon to the iPad, but could also open the door to features such as USB hosting, which Apple has historically eschewed. It might even replace the 30-pin connector that Apple launched back in 2003.

A second seedling Apple has planted in its ecosystem is AirDrop. Better, more convenient device-to-device communication is a need that Switched On discussed years ago. Promising approaches range from TransferJet to HP's recently unveiled Touch to Share; proliferation of near-field communication chips combined with Wi-Fi Direct should push progress forward on this front.

Still, Apple's approach ? while requiring user intervention ? represents a great step forward in terms of easing the transfer of files between computers that may physically be inches apart but feel worlds apart without a flash drive or common network at hand. At this point, we know AirDrop will support Mac-to-Mac transfers in Lion. However, Apple could counter Touch to Share with AirDrop if it is willing to lend more support to iTunes for wireless data transfer.

Thunderbolt and AirDrop would both add greatly to the functionality of iOS devices, but it's important to note that both raise challenges to Apple's control of the user experience. That's a tradeoff that has to be considered as any technology ecosystem grows.

Ross Rubin is executive director of industry analysis for consumer technology at market research and analysis firm The NPD Group. Views expressed in Switched On are his own.

Samsung Provides Android 2.2 (Froyo) Update To AT&T Captivate

It's tough to believe just how many months ago we reviewed Froyo. It was sunny, summer evening in 2010 when Android 2.2 began hitting the Nexus One, and now, over half a year later, some phones are still awaiting the update. Samsung's Galaxy S line has been a huge hit for the company, with over 10 million units sold worldwide and a version on every major carrier in the U.S. But for whatever reason, Froyo has been very slow to come to these phones. AT&T's version has been left Froyo-less for quite a long while, but it looks as if the company is hoping to correct that.

The Froyo update for the Samsung Captivate (AT&T's version of the Galaxy S) is finally upon us. Updating your phone isn't a total cakewalk, but at least Samsung provided a step-by-step guide on how to do it. The details are down in the via link, but at the very least, you'll need your phone, a USB cable and a PC with Internet. And maybe a little luck. But hey, at least you'll come out with Android 2.2!

Never mind the fact that some phones are already sporting Android 2.3...

Some of the Froyo features include:
 USB Tethering
 Mobile Hotspot
 Flash 10.1 Support
Enhanced Microsoft Exchange Support (Auto-Discovery, Global Address list look-up, Increased Security Features, and Exchange Calendars)
 Speed and Performance Optimizations
Ability to Install Apps Directly to SD card

Samson Zoom H1 Handy Recorder Review

Zoom-H1-1
Recording microphones are common place these days. They are on our phones, iPods, mp3 players and even on pens. But usually these microphones don?t result in the best audio quality from their built-inmono microphone. That?s where Samson?s Zoom H1 Handy Recorder comes in.

Zoom-H1-2
The package includes the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder with a preloaded 2GB microSD card, a AA battery and instruction manuals.

Zoom-H1-3
The Zoom H1 is made ofplastic and feels extremely lightweight. It has a professional look but it does feel like a toy. There?s a slight creaking when being lightly twisted or held tightly. We will go into that later on in this review. On the front of the device is a single record button and the display. And you might be able to see a rec/peak LED light on top of the display which comes in very handy since it will start flashing when the input source (mic or line-in) is above the recommended recording level.

Zoom-H1-4
On the left side are the 3.5mm line-out, volume buttons and the microSD card slot.

Zoom-H1-5
On the back are the lo-cut, auto level and file format switches. There?s also a standard tripod mount and the AA battery compartment.

Zoom-H1-6
On the ride side are the 3.5mm line-in, input level, forward, play/mark, rewind, delete and power/lock. There?s also a mini usb port for transferring the recordings to the PC or MAC.

Zoom-H1-7Zoom-H1-8
The most important part of any type of recorder is of course the microphone. The Zoom H1 has stereo X/Y microphones on the top surrounded by a plastic cage which is used for adding in a windscreen. The H1 has an optional accessory pack which includes the windscreen, AC adaptor, USB cable, mini tripod, padded case and a mic clip adaptor.

Zoom-H1-9
On the bottom is a small speaker which doesn?t play as loud as I hoped for. The speaker is fine for a small quiet room but it surely isn?t loud enough to hear in a convention hall.

Zoom-H1-10
The display shows the input levels, remaining recording time, file format and bitrate. The Zoom H1 records Broadcast WAV (BWF) at 96kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz at 16-bit or 24-bit and MP3 from 48 to 320kbps. A single AA battery lasts for 10 hours of recording time.

Samson Zoom H1 Basic Product Overview

Now for the actual audio test.

Zoom-H1-11Zoom-H1-12
I used 3 recorders: Sony IC Recorder, Samson Zoom H1 Recorder, and an Olympus Recorder. I also used a Kodak Playtouch for a video demo audio from portable camcorder. All audio samples are taken on their highest bitrate setting. All the recordings are done in a soundproof room. The speakers are playing at the same volume for all the recordings. There has been no post editing of the audio and video.

ZOOM-H1-audio

Sony-audio

Video and audio source direct from Kodak Playtouch

I would like to upload the audio sample from the Olympus recorder but it?s way too distorted and fuzzy to even give a good comparison with the Zoom H1.

In my opinion, the Zoom H1 does a pretty good job at providing a stereo recording experience. It did provide a far better recording verses the Sony and Olympus recorders but only a little bit better than the recorder on the Kodak Playtouch. The Zoom H1 is far from a professional recorder that you might use at a concert show, but it?s perfect for the amateur recording for a blog or press conference. It?s priced at $99 from B&H.

Product Information

Price: $99 from B&H
Manufacturer: Samson
Retailer: B&H
Pros:
  • Stereo microphones
  • High bitrate recording
  • Uses only 1 AA battery
Cons:
  • Audio recording quality not recommended for professional usage

Gmail accidentally resetting accounts, years of correspondence vanish into the cloud? (update)

If you've got a working Gmail account, you might want to back it up every so often -- as many as 500,000 Gmail users lost access to their inboxes this morn, and some of them are reporting (via Twitter and support forums) that years worth of messages, attachments and Google Chat logs had vanished by the time they were finally able to log on. While we haven't experienced the issue personally, we're hearing that the bug effectively reset some accounts, treating their owners as new users complete with welcome messages. For its part, Google says that the issue "affects less than .29% of the Google Mail userbase," engineers are working to fix the issue right now, and that missing messages will be restored as soon as possible. We'll soon see if this is a momentary setback... or a lengthy wakeup call.

Update: No fix yet, but Google's revised its estimate as to how many users might have been affected by the issue -- "less than 0.08%" -- which means we're probably looking at closer to 150,000 individuals, rather than 500,000. We're assuming that the revised estimate means that the initial count wasn't precise, and not that customers are ditching Gmail in droves.

Update 2: Google's provided promising but terribly vague guidance on when the situation will be resolved: "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change."

Tiny, Stick-On Joysticks for Touch Screen Gaming

Joystickers' Classic stick-on buttons for touch-screen phones. Photo: Joystickers

Check ?em out: nipples for the iPhone. Or, more accurately, ?removable gaming buttons for touch screens?.

We have seen a lot of clever products which add physical, moveable joysticks to touch-screen devices and make many games easier to play, but the Joystickers, as they are called, are about the simplest around. The nubbins stick straight onto the screen and transfer your movements via capacitive rubber.

They work like this: The outer cylinder and base sticks to the glass with a micro suction cup material. This houses the conductive rubber nubbin, which bobs around on an internal spring. Pull down with your thumb and the bottom edge contacts the screen, and so on.

Joystickers also makes a rather nice brush-shaped stylus and a regular pen-tip stylus, but these ?Classic? buttons are the coolest thing on offer, and they?re so tiny you could keep them in the little mystery pocket on your jeans. They?re also tiny enough to lose very quickly, but that?s really just your fault for being so careless.

Want some? You?ll need to pitch in over at Kickstarter, where a $40 pledge will buy you a pair of Classics.

BTDigg, the first DHT 'trackerless' decentralized torrent search engine

Despite DHT being included in major BitTorrent clients for years, the very first 'trackerless' torrent search engine has only just launched: BTDigg.

DHT is a decentralized and distributed technology that enables users to download files from nearby peers without contacting a central tracker. BTDigg crawls the massive DHT network, hopping from peer to peer, and slowly builds up an index of every torrent in existence -- in theory, anyway.

The exciting thing about BTDigg is that you now don't have to upload a torrent to a tracker or indexer to share something. BTDigg will eventually stumble across your shared files and index them. Of course, the irony is that BTDigg centralizes the decentralized DHT network, defeating any of its privacy and security benefits.

The main thing holding BTDigg back, though, is a truly atrocious interface and almost complete lack of functionality. It's green and orange, presumably in an attempt to look like old monochrome monitors. The search algorithm itself is awful -- and there's absolutely no way to refine your search, either. A search for "Glee EZTV" brought up a seemingly random and unchronological listing of episodes -- with lots of multiple results, too!

Still, it's a fun proof of concept. We're sure that future versions will be better...

Verizon CEO: iPhone best launch in history, Apple going to be part of LTE

Verizon CEO: iPhone best launch in history, Apple going to be part of LTE

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon Chief Executive Daniel Mead addressed reports of slower than expected Verizon iPhone sales by re-iterating that the launch was the most successful in their history. While he wouldn?t give specific figures prior to their next earnings releases, he said they carefully planned online sales and a staggered rollout to spread out purchasing.

Mr. Mead said more than 60% of iPhone sales occurred online. That heavy activity online contributed to short lines on launch day, which were noted by many news outlets. ?If we had not done online, you would have seen a much different flow in the pictures,? he said. In a few days, the company will double the number of stores that sell the iPhone, going from 4,000 to 8,000.

They also expect Apple to eventually offer an iPhone and iPad that work on their 4G LTE network:

?You?ll see more coming from Apple on LTE,? he said. ?They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it.?

AT&T iPhone comes out the same time of year, every year, when contracts are ready for renewal and/or AT&T offers early renewal. The was no cycle for the Verizon iPhone ? unless by pure chance your contract was up or you don?t care about subsidies many people are probably waiting until their next upgrade ? maybe even waiting for iPhone 5.

Perhaps Verizon staggering the availability, doing pre-orders and opening online orders early lowered lineups, but everything about the launch disfavored lines.

We?ll know for sure when the numbers come out, but what?s your hunch?

Consumer Reports doesn?t recommend the Verizon iPhone 4 either

duct tape on an iPhone 4 to prevent antenna problems

Consumer Reports appears to still be ranting about the reception issues on the iPhone 4, this time they?re targeting the Verizon iPhone 4 and excluding it from their list of recommended smartphones.

For that reason, we are not including the Verizon iPhone 4 in our list of recommended smart phones, despite its high ranking in our Ratings. Although Apple no longer offers a free case to buyers of the iPhone 4, as it did for a time after the problem was first discovered on the AT&T version, the company has said in the past that it will consider requests for a free case from customers who buy the phone and subsequently experience reception problems.

Consumer Reports helped set off Antennagate when the AT&T iPhone 4 was originally released. After their initial review of the iPhone 4, Consumer Reports claimed they couldn?t recommend the iPhone 4 due to the antenna issues.

I don?t know about any of you but the reception problems didn?t ever affect me personally. Maybe because I always use cases or bumpers. (Who doesn?t put a case on a phone as expensive as the iPhone?) I guess I?m not quite sure why Consumer Reports is still ranting about the issues. Millions of iPhones later, people still want them. All phones have signal attenuation issues when held, not just the iPhone. Is it just me or is Consumer Reports making mountains out of mole hills? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Motorola XOOM Android Tablet ? Love at First Swipe?

Last fall I dumped my iPhone 4 for a Droid X on Verizon. When a Motorola XOOM tablet showed up on my door step yesterday, I wondered if I?d be dumping yet another iOS device in favor one running Android. It?s a very sexy device and Honeycomb (Android 3.0) really appeals to my sweet tooth.I?ll have a full review by Monday, but until then, I thought I?d give you a little teaser.

I only get to keep the XOOM till Monday, when I have to ship it back to Verizon. That doesn?t give me a whole lot of time to put it through its paces, but I?m going to try my best.

You all know I?ll be comparing the Motorola XOOM to the iPad? that?s a no brainer for sure.

Here we can see the iPad and XOOM to compare their size. The angle of this image doesn?t show thatthe XOOM is a little narrower than the iPad. The iPad is 9.56 x 7.47 x0.5 inches, while the XOOM is 9.80 x 6.61 x 0.51 inches. According to the specs there isn?t a huge difference in size. I think the XOOM?s thinner bezel tricks your eyes into thinking it is a lotsmaller than it really is. As far as weight, the iPad weighs 25.6 ounces and the XOOM weighs 25.7 ounces. But to me, the XOOM feels noticeablyheavier in hand. That said, I got those weight specs from the web, so maybe they are wrong. I?ll definitely compare the weight on my own digital scale for the full review.

Besides the physical attributes, the XOOM has a lot of things going for it if you?re trying to decide between it and an iPad. The XOOM?s 10.1-inch widescreen HD (1280800) display is larger and has more resolution than the iPad?s 9.7-inch (1024768) display. The XOOM also has a built in 5MP camera on the back in addition to 2MP camera on the front for video chat. You can also expand the XOOM with a microSD card. The iPad has none of those features at this time.

Do I sound like I?m already in love with the XOOM? I won?t deny it, but right now I think it?s just a crush because I?ve not really had enough quality time with it yet.

Since I won?t have a lot of time with this device, please let me know if you have any specific questions that you would like me to answer or any thing you would like me to test for the review.

Firefox 4 for Mobile beta 5 released, try it on your Windows or Mac PC!

Not only is Firefox 4 for Mobile beta 5 ready to test on your Android or Maemo phone, but you can also download and run the browser on your Windows, Mac or Linux PC.

The new beta brings a slew of fixes and spit-shines, and for the first time it almost feels finished -- just in time, considering the final release is due in the next week or two. There are now over 100 mobile add-ons -- but, of course, in true Firefox beta fashion, fery few of them have been updated to work with the new beta. For a complete list of the changes and known issues, check the release notes.

Finally, you must check out the PC version of Firefox 4 for Mobile! It's an almost-perfect copy of the real deal: you can try out add-ons, and click-and-drag to simulate a touch interface. It's a lot easier to explore the (rather sexy) new UI with a proper desktop processor, and a keyboard and mouse, too.

Ubuntu 11.04 Unity keyboard shortcuts have a distinct Windows 7 flavor

Ubuntu's new Unity interface already drew some raised eyebrows because of its looks, which are arguably similar to the Windows 7 taskbar. Now, the Ask Ubuntu site has posted a list of Unity keyboard shortcuts -- and those take a cue from Windows 7 as well.
  • The super key, which typically refers to the Windows key on most standard keyboards, invokes the Unity Launcher -- on Windows, this would call up the Start Menu
  • Super + 1/2/3, etc. launches the app in that position on the Unity dockbar -- much like the Windows 7 feature
  • Super + D minimizes and restores all windows -- a hotkey combo in Windows since XP
So why the similarities? If you're trying to steal away desktop market share from the dominant operating system, it's not going to hurt if you make it easy for power users to get comfortable on your alternative OS. By implementing familiar keyboard shortcuts in Unity, Canonical is no doubt giving Windows users an Eric Idle style nudge in the ribs and saying, "C'mon, give us a try!"

With WUBI making it so easy to install and dual-boot Ubuntu from within Windows and an easy profile data import tool offered during setup, Canonical is doing its best to entice defectors.

ipaper

ipaperWhile an official app has yet to be released by Instapaper, Instapaper Client works quite fine as a replacement. Its basic and simple UI offers an easy to read interface for all your articles sent to Instapaper for offline reading. Rather then having to pull down that data each and every time Instapaper client caches it for reading at a later time. It?s free and awesome for any already existing fans of the Instapaper service. Jerry Hildenbrand -- Mountain Chase

mountain

mountain chaseI caught wind of this one from our forums, and I?m glad I did. I?m a sucker for two things -- old-school pixel games, and zombies, and Mountain Chase uses 'em both well. It?s a downhill skiing game, much like Ski Free from old DOS and Windows 3.1 days, and it?s simple enough to be enjoyable. Add in bandits or zombies, ramps, and obstacles and it?s a perfect way to waste a few minutes. It?s free, works on Android 1.6 and higher, and fun as hell. [Market Link]

NTT DoCoMo's Medias N-04C Is World's Slimmest Smartphone

Those who follow the consumer electronics industry closely will probably remember the LCD TV wars of a few years ago. It wasn't the race to 1080p, it was the race to impossibly thin. Sets were coming out thinner and thinner, with each company grappling for the claim of "world's thinnest television." Those wars finally ended, and now it's more about feature set (and 3D) than about depth. Pretty much every flat-panel is "thin enough," but that battle is seemingly coming to the smartphone arena next.
The iPhone 4 was briefly hailed as the world's slimmest smartphone, and a few Android phones have since emerged and attempted to claim that title. Now, NTT DoCoMo (a Japanese wireless carrier) is claiming the same. The Medias N-04C measures a scant 7.7mm thick, and it weighs only 105 grams. According to company president Ryuji Yamada: "This is the world's slimmest and lightest smartphone." Aside from being a run-of-the-mill Android phone, it features a 1seg digital TV tuner, mobile wallet capabilities and IR communication support. There's also a 4" LCD touch panel (854 x 480 resolution) that relies on Corning's Gorilla Glass, a 5MP camera and a battery rated for 1230mAh. The handset will ship with Froyo (Android 2.2), but will be upgraded to Gingerbread (Android 2.3) "in the summer of 2011."
The company also seems sure that they'll continue pushing the boundaries with thickness. No further details were given, but it sounds like the company has no plans to give up the crown any time soon.

Lion Scopes Out Territory in Apple Ecosystem

Apple's newest iteration of OS X, Lion, includes some features inspired by iOS, the system designed specifically for the iPhone and iPad. Like iOS, Lion comes with an app store built in. One burning question is whether Apple will make an effort to corral most -- if not all -- of the software developed for OS X and make it available only through the Mac App Store, a move that would most likely be viewed as too controlling -- even for Apple.

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may be hoping that Mac operating system release number eight becomes the eighth wonder of the technological world. The company released a developers preview of the OS, code-named "Lion," on Thursday.

However, Lion is primarily a "user interface evolution rather than a back-end functionality upgrade," according to Appitalism founder and CEO Simon Buckingham. Mac OS X Lion features Mission Control, a new Mac view; Launchpad, a new app home; full screen apps that use the entire Mac display; and of course, the new Mac App Store.

Mission Control provides a "bird's eye view of every app and window running on your Mac," said Apple representative Monica Sarkar. "Launchpad makes it easier than ever to find and launch any app. Multi-touch gestures give you a natural and intuitive way to interact, like pinching your fingers to zoom in and swiping left or right to turn a page."

iPad Inspiration

With the wild popularity of its iHandhelds -- iPad, iPhone and iPod -- it's no wonder Apple is incorporating a slew of iOS features into OS X.

"The iPad has inspired a new generation of innovative features in Lion," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.

Those features come with a dizzying array of trademarked monikers. "Conversations" automatically groups related messages into a single timeline. "AirDrop" copies files wirelessly from one Mac to another.

"Versions" automatically saves successive versions of a document, with additional browse, edit and revert options. "Resume" brings apps back exactly as they were left on quit or restart. And "FileVault" provides disk encryption for local and external drives, along with the ability to wipe data instantaneously.

"I suspect all these new features hint at an accelerated announcement pace," Appitalism's Buckingham told MacNewsWorld. "Apple will probably move to twice yearly OS and iOS updates so that Android doesn't catch up to them."

App Store Roar

The new Lion features could hint at tighter controls over Mac software -- even more restrictive, perhaps, than those that apply to the iOS App Store.

Still, Lion and Apple iDevices are different animals, said Herbert Tsang, Ph.D., a bioinformatics researcher and instructor at the Simon Fraser University School of Computing Science.

"Through the App Store, the tight control that Apple has over their iDevices software is notorious," Tsang told MacNewsWorld. "There is no indication, however, that the [Mac] App Store will be the only way to obtain Mac software."

A Lion roaming in Apple's pristine ecosystem might also suggest that even higher walls are on the way. However, the act of building those walls would likely leave clues, "such as making iOS apps seamlessly available on the Mac platform, which is what I'd be looking for if I thought Lion involved issues of increasing control," Appitalism's Buckingham told TechNewsWorld. "I don't see any of that, however."

In fact, coupling the Mac App Store too tightly and seamlessly to the Mac would be a "step backward" in the progress of technology, SFU's Tsang remarked.

Simply having an app store available on a Mac, however, "is a way for individual developers to sell their software and will be a great benefit," he said. "The new integration ... in Mac OS X Lion is a way to benefit individual software developers. It is an effort to offer alternatives, rather than exclusivities.
