BlackBerry OS 6 beta available to download and try

Though it's currently only available for three of its devices, RIM has posted a beta download of BlackBerry OS 6. If you own a BlackBery Bold 9700, Bold 9780, or Curve 3G 9300 and you happen to be a T-Mobile customer, head on over to the Beta Zone and download OS 6 for your device if you'd like to try it out.

Sure, the 9780 already ships with OS6, but the beta version will give you a glimpse of new features and tweaks that weren't baked-in from day one.

Samsung prepping portrait QWERTY Android phone for Sprint?

If you were to prepare a list of most under-served smartphone form factors, portrait QWERTY ranks high on the list; few manufacturers have dared to dabble in it so far, despite the fact that there would seem to be a treasure trove of potential users in the BlackBerry realm who live and die by the Bold / Curve layout. Motorola has given it the most high-publicity shot so far with entries like the Droid Pro, Charm, and Flipout, and it looks like Samsung might be prepping a head-on Droid Pro competitor for Sprint thanks to some shots that have emerged on PocketNow today. We have precisely zero details on the hardware specs, the possible launch time frame, or really anything else at this point, but we'll keep an eye out.

[Thanks, Theodore L.]

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Add detail to any image using the Mesh Fill tool

This is the third of four weekly CorelDRAW demos/tutorials. The previous two were about making a Polaroid-like image and vectorizing a simple logo.

This week's video is more of a simple demo than a tutorial: One of CorelDRAW's coolest features is the Mesh Fill. Those of you familiar with Adobe Illustrator will recognize the tool instantly: It allows you to add a great level of detail to otherwise simple vector objects. You can take a simple oval and make it into a photorealistic water droplet using nothing but the Mesh Fill tool.

This tool requires a great deal of practice to master ? it's not a simple technique. Rather than attempt a complete drawing, I elected to simply show what it can do. If you've never used a vector drawing application before, this video will give you a good idea of what can be done using the Mesh Fill tool. Take the jump to watch the video.

GNOME 3 Shell now available to test in SUSE and Fedora Live image format

GNOME Shell, the skin on top of the upcoming GNOME 3 desktop manager, can now be easily and safely tested by simply burning a Live CD, making a bootable USB stick, or simply mounting an image in VirtualBox. Fedora, ahead of GNOME 3's adoption in version 15 of the distro, wants people to alpha test with a live image of Rawhide; or if you're not a fan of Fedora, there's also a SUSE-based GNOME 3 Live image.

Both flavors will let you test the upcoming and much-anticipated release of GNOME 3 and Shell without meddling with your current OS -- and you can try it out, irrespective of whether you're currently a Linux users or not.

I've successfully opened both live image ISOs in VirtualBox, so you don't even need to reboot to try out GNOME 3 -- hooray!
